About this Destination

Kutai National Park spans approximately 198,000 hectares along the equator near Sangatta and Bontang. Unlike sanctuary islands, the Prevab research station within Kutai is one of the premier locations in Southeast Asia to encounter truly wild, non-rehabilitated Bornean orangutans feeding high in the tree canopy. Accompanied by experienced national park rangers, trekkers traverse silent forest trails spotting maroon langurs, hornbills, sun bears, and majestic ironwood trees (ulin).

How to Get There

Fly to Balikpapan or Samarinda, then private road transfer to Sangatta, followed by a motorized canoe across the Sangatta River into Prevab.

Responsible Travel Tips

Strictly observe ranger directives. Flash photography is prohibited when observing wild orangutans to prevent distress.
Best Time to Visit
May to October for dry trekking paths; year-round for wildlife
