Meratus UNESCO Global Geopark: BorneoÔÇÖs Geological Masterpiece

UNESCO officially recognized Meratus UNESCO Global Geopark as a UNESCO Global Geopark on 17 April 2025, placing it among the worldÔÇÖs internationally significant geological landscapes. Located in South Kalimantan, this exceptional territory preserves an ancient collision of tectonic plates dating back nearly 200 million years.

What Makes Meratus Unique?

Unlike volcanic ranges in Java and Sumatra, the Meratus mountains represent an exposed piece of the EarthÔÇÖs ancient oceanic mantle and ophiolite suite. When tectonic forces collided during the Cretaceous era, seabed rocks were pushed skyward, creating mineral-rich soils, dramatic limestone towers, and lush biodiversity that sheltered endemic orchids and flora.

Experiencing Meratus with Us

Travelers visiting Meratus with Borneo Kalimantan Tours explore the tranquil Amandit River valleys of Loksado on traditional bamboo rafts, hike through fragrant cinnamon forests, and learn about the sacred indigenous Dayak Bukit culture centered around communal balai dwellings.
