Encountering a wild or rehabilitated orangutan in the dense rainforests of Borneo is among the worldÔÇÖs most moving wildlife moments. However, as humans and orangutans share over 97% of their DNA, our presence poses real health risks to these endangered great apes.
Essential Guidelines for Every Traveler:
- Maintain 10 Metres Distance: Never approach an orangutan closely, even if one walks onto the forest boardwalk. Always step back and give them space.
- Never Feed the Wildlife: Human food can cause severe illness, dental decay, and dangerous behavioral dependency. Keep all snacks locked away in your backpack.
- Do Not Visit if Feeling Unwell: Simple human ailments like the common cold, influenza, and respiratory viruses can be fatal to orangutans.
- Follow Your Ranger: Always stay with your certified local guide and national park ranger who understand primate body language and territory rules.
